According to the New York Times, in a study of Microsoft employees, workers took, on average, 15 minutes to get back to intense mental tasks, like writing reports or computer code, after responding to email or instant messages.

Focusing on more than one thing causes a 40% drop in productivity.

The average employee loses 2.1 hours a day to interruptions or distractions. That’s 546 hours a year.

Interruptions are estimated to cost the American economy nearly $650 billion a year.
